Gambling Lessons Never Learned

There are a few rules in gambling you should never break. A few of those rules include…

  • Never bet on a team you haven’t seen play.
  • Never bet when your wife wants you to do something for her that day or that night or that month or that year.
  • Never bet when your kid is asking you to help with their math homework because you’ll answer with something non-sensical like, ‘Let’s see what the odds are on that two-team moneyline parlay.’
  • Never bet on a team with Kwahi Leonard, Paul George and James Harden wearing the same jersey.
  • Never, ever bet after you lost a huge sum on a big game.

At age 53, you think I’d be smart enough by now not to break these rules but sure enough tonight I threw Michigan at home against Long Beach State into a moneyline parlay. I haven’t seen either team play this year. I couldn’t tell you one player for Long Beach State. And I barely know any Michigan players. It’s not like the Fab 5 are walking through that door anytime this season.Still, Michigan was 3-0 and favored by 15 points. Did I mention they were at home? Long Beach State lost its season opener to Portland, a team I know for a fact isn’t good. So of course Michigan lost by 8 and I lost my parlay.

Let this be a lesson to me. And you. But since only 6-8 people are reading this, mostly me. Don’t bet on teams you know nothing about. It never ends well.
