Every month we try to invest a little more money for our retirement. But these days, I’m not too sure where, exactly, the money should go. Of course, index funds and market tracking ETF’s are still a great option but with the FED threatening to aggressively raise interest rates, it could be quite some time before the market, and tech stocks in particular, bounce back.
In terms of individual stocks, I’m particularly worried about Facebook. We’ve owned shares since 2012, and while they’re up 442% since those early days, I feel the party may be over. Facebook feels old. It has for quite some time. Not Bill Russell old, but certainly Charles Barkley old. No one under 40 is posting anything even remotely interesting or funny on Facebook. Instagram was supposed to solve that problem but now it feels old too.
So for Zuckerberg, it all comes down to the metaverse. Is it really the next frontier? Right now, it feels more like a desperate attempt to regain relevance than the future. I’ll admit, I don’t play video games. I don’t want to sit inside, put on a headset and live in an alternate universe. I’d much rather make-out with my wife in person than have an affair with her avatar. Real appreciates real.
With Facebook, Shopify, The Trade Desk, Pinterest, Paypal, and a host of other tech stocks substantially down from their overvalued value, it’s tempting to double down and buy more shares of company’s you truly believe in. But do you really believe in them anymore? These days, I believe a lot more in Ja Morant than I do in Mark Zuckerberg.
Don’t get me wrong, I still invest the majority of our available funds in the market. But this month I also put a little bit on the following futures parlays:
Ja Morant to win Most Improved + Evan Mobley to win Rookie of the Year (-120)
Ja Morant Most Improved Player + Evan Mobley ROY + Monty Williams Coach of the Year (+143)
Ja Morant Most Improved Player + Evan Mobley ROY + Monty Williams Coach of the Year + Joel Embiid (+631)
Division Winners Parlay Bucks + Suns + Grizzlies (+143)
Of course, nothing is certain. Especially not Embiid’s MVP run now that James, I’m-gonna=dominate-the-ball-whenever-I-feel-like-it-or-I’ll-just-demand-another=trade Harden has been added to the mix. Still, barring injuries, it’s hard to see anyone other than Morant and Mobley winning those respective awards. And if Monty Williams doesn’t win Coach of the Year, I’m going on a hunger strike.
All I’m sayin’ is, if you have a few extra scheckels to spare, and you don’t feel comfortable with the metaverse or crypto or anything fungible, why not invest in Ja Morant? Right now, he’s the only sure thing.
